Troubleshooting tips

Common setup issues solved

Step-by-step setup

1

Format your USB drive

Use a USB drive between 8 GB and 128 GB. Plug it into your computer and format it as exFAT or FAT32. exFAT is preferred because it handles large files and works on every modern Tesla.

2

Create the LightShow folder

At the root of the USB drive, create a folder named exactly LightShow (capital L, capital S, no spaces). This is the folder your Tesla scans for custom light show files.

3

Download light show files

Download the correct .zip for your vehicle. Extract it and copy the .fseq sequence file and the matching audio file into the LightShow folder on your USB drive.

4

Plug USB into your Tesla

Insert the USB drive into one of your Tesla's front USB ports. Wait a few seconds for the car to recognize the drive and scan the LightShow folder.

5

Open the Toybox

On your Tesla touchscreen, go to Toybox > Light Show. If the files are correct, you'll see your custom show listed. Select it and tap Start Show.

6

Enjoy the show

Roll the windows down, turn the volume up, and watch your Tesla put on a synchronized light and sound performance.

Vehicle compatibility

Tesla light show files are not one-size-fits-all. Make sure you download the package built for your vehicle's hardware generation.

  • S3XY — Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y produced before the 2025 Juniper refresh.
  • Juniper — 2025 and newer Model Y refresh only.
  • Cybertruck — Requires Cybertruck-specific sequences due to unique lighting hardware.

Frequently asked questions

What file format does a Tesla light show use?+

Tesla light shows use a .fseq sequence file paired with an audio track (usually .mp3 or .wav). Both files must be placed in the LightShow folder on a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive.

Where can I download Tesla light show files?+

You can download free community-made light shows from event sites like this one, or create your own with xLights using the Tesla light show export plugin.

Why isn't my light show showing up?+

Double-check the folder name is exactly LightShow at the root of the drive, the USB is formatted exFAT or FAT32, and both the .fseq and audio files are present. Some vehicles also require the drive to be plugged into the front USB ports.

Does my Tesla support custom light shows?+

Most Model S, 3, X, and Y vehicles produced in the last several years support the Light Show feature. Newer 2025+ Model Y refreshes (Juniper) require files built specifically for that platform.
